June 21, 2010, Toronto, KS – Girard, KS

Day 27

We woke up to the beautiful scene of fog over the Toronto Lake, it reminded me of fishing at Kentucky Lake with my dad and cousins.  Though it was early we were ready to get up because lying in the humid weather was miserable.

Today’s ride was dedicated to the desk clerk at the Hampton Inn we stayed at in Wichita, KS.  She was getting married in a month and her father has Alzheimer’s.  We were all touched by her story of being afraid her father would walk her down the aisle and not know who she is.

The ride today was very mentally challenging.  We are certainly approaching the hilly and humid area of the U.S. for today it seemed everytime we summated a hill there was another waiting directly after.  We all seemed to be getting tired in the heat and a little put out.  We are always ready to ride but sometimes the soreness, solitude, and long hours on the bike can get to you.  We also had our first encounters with a few dogs that we had to bark at and scare off.  However, we made it to Girard where we were welcomed by a wonderful couple.

Terry and Maurice are Girard residents and Maurice is actually the mayor of Girard.  They had snacks and drinks ready for us and had a comfy house to get out of the heat.  They were so inspiring with their hospitality and generosity.  So many times I have a hoarding mentality with the blessing God has granted to me, but this couple said, “If God has blessed us with this house, it is a joy to be able to share it with those who need it.”  I am continuing to learn more and more as God teaches me new things on this journey.

We ate a wonderful dinner provided by the local Alzheimer’s association chapter, interviewed with the local news station and paper, and even played a little N64 that the family had in their house.  It was a great night and we were excited to rest in a nice house and continue our journey and continue to meet wonderful people along the way.
