May 28, 2010 - 1st rest day Salome, AZ

Day 4,

We took our first rest day at Sheffler’s motel in Salome, AZ.  It was pretty run down but was perfect for us because it was cheap and we had beds to sleep in.  Plus, there was a really good Mexican restaurant/pool bar called the Cactus Bar and Cafe that we would enjoy a couple times.

The morning of our rest day we woke up around 9am, which was a very nice change compared to the past three days waking up at 5am.  I was able to get some time away to read my devotional and simply thank God for the wonderful journey I had enjoyed thus far.  I read out of the devotional book, “My Utmost For His Highest”, by Oswald Chambers.  It read out of John when Jesus was addressing his disciples right before he would be crucified.  Jesus said to them that there will come a time when they will no longer see him (the crucifixion) but after they would see him.  As I ride my bike for several hours I often think about God and where He wants to send me.  But, I am reminded that since He died for me I now get to see Him at work through me each day since He lives in my heart.

Wade and I were talking while riding the other about a random thought I had while riding.  I thought back to when I first learned how to ride a bike.  My father helped me gradually learn from training wheels to assisted wheels.  I remember being upset and frustrated when I could not stand on two wheels.  But, I remember he always encouraged me to stick with it and eventually it would become natural.  I then asked Wade, “What if when you were struggling to learn to ride a bike your father said, “Son, one day you will ride your bicycle across the whole United States.”?  I loved Wade’s response.  He said it reminded him of how God works with his children.  Though we often find it tough at times to learn and struggle through things, God knows that greater things are in store to those who are faithful.

So after some bike maintenance, a few trips to visit George Anne (the waitress at Cactus Bar and Cafe), and some time to just chill out with my bro’s, our rest day came to a close and we prepared for the next day.  The rest day came at the perfect time as we had some tough journeys ahead of us, but we knew that our work would not go unharvested as people learned and gave toward the cause.  May we honor God and bring hope to all those who hear of us, and may they be encouraged to know that seven college students have dedicated their summer to bring hope to the suffering.
